The primary responsibility for behavior rests with the individual resident. Consideration and tolerance of others is a minimum requirement in on-campus housing settings. Fines may be assessed and/or disciplinary actions may be taken against individuals who do not follow campus and residential building policies.
Posting Items on Common Space Walls
All general posting of informational posters, flyers, and advertisements should be posted on established bulletin boards. All postings that are mounted on any other surface will be removed. Only blue/purple painters tape should be used to post items as not to damage the walls of the buildings.
Maximum Occupancy
Residents should be mindful of how many people can safely and reasonably fit into any specific space including individual rooms, common spaces, etc. in the event of fire or other emergency that would necessitate evacuation.
Northland College welcomes guests of residents to visit the campus. The guest policy encompasses the following:
Each hall has at least one kitchen equipped with a stove/oven, refrigerator, and microwave. It is the responsibility of all residents to keep kitchens clean after use. If kitchens are not well maintained by the hall residents, the privilege of using the kitchen will be revoked. Pots and pans can be checked-out through a RA.
Laundry facilities are located in each residence hall. There is no charge to students at the time of use. You can see available units by searching Northland College at laundryview.com. If a machine is not working, please contact an RA or HRA to advise them of the machine and its problems or residents can call 1-800-MAC-GRAY.
It is often difficult to define an appropriate noise level. HRAs and RAs work to maintain an atmosphere conducive to studying.
During Quiet Hours, doors should be shut, and room noise should be kept to a reasonably low level.

All other times of the day Courtesy Hours should be kept.

Since Residential Life does not provide room cleaning, residents must keep their room in good order for health and sanitary reasons. Rooms left unclean or the misuse of furnishings could result in a maintenance service charge. Health and safety checks will be one way Residential Life will work with residents to maintain a safe and friendly environment in residential communities.
Cleaning supplies are the responsibility of the resident to secure. Residents should remember to work with roommates and neighbors when selecting cleaning supplies. Northland College highly encourages individuals to use green products (non-toxic, biodegradable, etc.) whenever possible. For vacuums and other cleaning supplies, residents should see a RA or HRA to seek availability.
At this time, residents may loft only the furniture in the MELLC as it is designed for lofting. Residents may not bring or build lofting equipment for rooms in residential facilities. Furniture should not be lofted on blocks or any other homemade device as this can present serious potential for accidents. Periodic checks will be made by the Residential Life staff to make sure that residents are not lofting furniture.
For safety reasons, as well as to avoid excessive wear, residents are not allowed to remove windows or screens. In case of an emergency or fire, the screen is able to be pulled/pushed out to allow residents to exit.
If a screen is removed for any non-emergency reason, the residents will be assessed a fine for each day the screen is not secured in the window frame. Replacement of a screen not returned within five days will include the daily cost of the screen up to that point, cost of the screen replacement, and labor to replace the screen. In addition, this is a conduct violation and may be handled through the college judicial process.
At Northland College, the costs of damages and vandalism that cannot be attributed to a specific individual are shared by everyone. Therefore, Northland College reserves the right to assess residents the charges for damages that occur in public areas of a residential building (lounges, hallways, stairwells, etc.). In these instances, all residents of a building or all residents of a specific floor/wing will be assessed charges on their student accounts for damages that occurred in their residential facility.
Any acts of theft or vandalism should be reported immediately to a Resident Advisor (RA) or Residential Life professional staff, or by contacting Campus Safety at 715-682-1399. Lost and found items should be turned over to Campus Safety.
Residents are encouraged to carry their own renter’s insurance, as Northland College is not liable for personal property that is lost, stolen or damaged in any way.
Residents are responsible for helping to maintain the security of each residence hall. Residents should lock their individual room doors, ensure exterior doors shut behind them when entering/exiting the building, and immediately report all suspicious activity to Residential Life or Campus Safety staff.
