The Town of La Pointe on Madeline Island hosts a summer recreation program for youth. We are hiring a recreation director and assistant director for summer 2019.

Recreation Director
The recreation director, with assistance from other town staff, develops, implements and evaluates all recreational activities for the Madeline Island Library’s Summer Recreation Program, for up to 30 participants ages 6-13 each summer.

The school age recreation director must ensure the overall health and safety of participants while they participate in recreational activities. Participate with youth in the following areas: outdoor fun, values, games, sports & fitness, storytelling, drama, field trips, vocational or life skills, and more.

Responsible for planning a daily/weekly activity schedule which may include, but is not limited to, the following: tennis, baseball (or tee-ball) swimming (only with a certified lifeguard present), soccer, kickball, croquet, camping trips, biking trips, art projects, and indoor activities. Administering supervision when collaboration with other rec groups or contracted programs is happening. This is a position that requires an energetic person with an interest in young people ages 6 -13.

Assistant Director 
The recreation program assistant will assist both recreation directors and implement specific recreational activities for the Madeline Island Library’s Summer Recreation Program ages 4-5 years old and up to 8 participants daily.

The recreation program assistant must ensure the overall health and safety of participants while they participate in recreational activities and effectively work with the early childhood director and the school age director. This assistant will be utilized with both early childhood children and school aged children as needed and determined by all program directors. Participate with youth in one or more of the following areas: gardening, arts, trail walking, quiet/storytime, free play on the playground, swimming and beach play. This is a position that requires an energetic person with an interest in young people ages 4-13, Special interest 4-5 year olds

The program will be open 5 days a week (Mondays through Fridays), 7 hours a day for twelve weeks from approximately mid/early- June – mid/late August). The work week calls for 35 hours per week, which allows for 1 hour per day (or 5 hours per week) of preparation time.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

Recreation Director

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Model and explain appropriate behavior.
  • Use corrective steps to prevent, eliminate, and deal with discipline problems.
  • Communicate with the Immediate Supervisor and parents regarding behavior or discipline problems encountered as needed.
  • Be available to participants and respond to their needs and concerns.
  • Implement and maintain a participant registration system including parent/supervisor contract, medical information for the participant, parent/supervisor name and signature, address, phone number and emergency contact information. All original forms for each participant shall be kept on file in the library
  • Maintain an accurate daily attendance list.
  • Maintain and inventory a stock of needed supplies, including but not limited to, cleaning supplies, first aid, games and equipment. Order additional supplies as needed and as budgeted.
  • Submit a written report to the library director at the end of each month. The report should include number of participants per day, examples of activities attendees engaged in, number of volunteers and what they volunteered to do, any problems encountered, and any other comments the Director may have. Utilize any new analytics that are implemented to track programming.
  • Maintain the safety and well being of all program participants at the Recreation Center.
  • Inventory recreation supplies at end of the summer program.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the library director.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be age 18 or older and possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Experience working with groups of youth, preferably ages 6 to 13.
  • Experience with creating and implementing recreational activities.
  • Proven ability to interact with youth in a supportive, safe and encouraging way.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to pass a criminal history check.
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification required.
  • Lifeguard Certification recommended.
  • Must have Hepatitis vaccination.

Assistant Director
