The counselor shall serve as the primary personal counselor for students. The counselor shall assist in the administration and management of the counseling program of the college, and shall assist in assessing the current counseling program and help develop future plans to enhance the program. This is a ten-month (83.3%) position requiring some evening and weekend commitments.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide personal counseling and mental health referral for students
    1. Collaborate with students to develop short-term treatment plans
      1. Provide assessment and treatment plans for individual students
      2. Provide primary mental health counseling for students, within the limits of time and competencies of the counselor.
      3. Refer students to area agencies for longer-term or specialized care.
      4. Provide follow-up with referral agencies and track student progress
    2. Communicate effectively about students’ psychological needs and concerns to appropriate campus and community resource personnel.
  2. Provide crisis intervention, assessment, and coordination of emergency situations
    1. Function as a team member to assist in the facilitation of a multi-disciplinary intervention approach that focuses on triaging clinical emergencies, coordinating intervention, and assuring appropriate individual and organizational follow-up.
    2. Collaborate as a team member and perform assessment of complicated clinical situations, including the potential risk of harm to self or others.
    3. When required, access emergency services for further treatment and/or detainment. Counselor must be prepared to make this initial judgment independently, with subsequent consultation and collaboration with the vice president of student affairs.
    4. Coordinate the behavioral intervention team.
  3. Build cooperative and effective relationships with community mental health care providers
    1. Develop relationships with additional local mental health providers, including inpatient hospitalization programs and outpatient programs. Assist in providing outreach, consultation, and referral on behalf of students for the college
  4. Provide a pro-active, mental health education program for students
    1. Assist in the training and ongoing education for housing peer paraprofessionals including intervention and referral techniques
    2. Provide crisis support and consultation for peer paraprofessionals
  5. Perform in a team capacity and collaborate with colleagues in the student fife division of the college
    1. Work cooperatively with the vice president of student affairs and the counseling advisory committee to determine current and future programmatic needs for the mental health programs of the college
    2. Provide an annual assessment and report of the counseling services of the college
    3. Participate in professional development activities
    4. Collaborate with colleagues regarding planning, implementation and assessment of services, the mission and direction of Student Life
    5. Foster collaborative relationships with faculty, other staff and student organizations of the college
    6. Maintain knowledge of current legal and ethical issues related to mental health in higher education
    7. Advise and inform student life colleagues of current trends and issues related to mental health care in higher education
    8. Consult on student judicial proceedings when needed and within the bounds of confidentiality

Minimum Qualifications

  • MA or MS in counseling, and currently certified as a mental health care provider/counselor.
