A CASDA internship is an unpaid, supervised educational experience during which the participating student acts as a functioning, contributing member of the staff, in support of our agency mission. Internships are offered year-round, based on current availability and on candidate qualifications. Timeframe and weekly time commitment vary by specific position and by participating student’s program requirements.

Internship Benefits

Internship Focuses
There are two internships available with our organization: Domestic Abuse Program or Community Engagement Program.

Domestic Abuse Program
This internship is based in our Washburn Office, but training and orientation will be in Superior. The goal of this position is to help clients move forward toward a safe and healthy life free of abuse. The CASDA Domestic Abuse Program provides client services such as family-centered safety planning, training on the dynamics of domestic abuse, court accompaniment and empowerment-based advocacy.

A domestic abuse program intern will learn about the impact of domestic violence on individuals and families while providing direct support to adults who have been victimized by abuse.

Orientation includes: Complete CASDA orientation and office training (with community
engagement coordinator), complete program orientations (CASDA full training), observe domestic abuse program coordinator with clients

Community Engagement Intern
This internship is primarily done from your home computer/school computer, with some interactions in Washburn and training and orientation in Superior. A CASDA community engagement program intern will learn about and participate in activities related to engaging the broader community’s support at a non-profit agency specializing in services to individuals hurt by domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.

A community engagement program intern will help recruit, train, coordinate and recognize volunteers; design and revise program materials; participate in fundraising activities; support outreach efforts such as our social media strategy; and interact directly with CASDA clients on an as-needed basis.

Orientation includes: Complete CASDA orientation and office training (community engagement coordinator), complete program orientations (CASDA full training), observe community engagement coordinator completing relevant tasks.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

DOMESTIC ABUSE PROGRAM

Required Qualifications
Desire to provide advocacy to victims of domestic violence, strong interpersonal communication skills, ability to remain non-judgmental by using trauma-informed care practices, ability to set clear, professional boundaries and to maintain client and agency confidentiality

Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience working with diverse populations, degree or coursework in relevant field, such as Sociology, Social Justice, Sustainable Community Development, or Pre-med.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Plan and promote Domestic Abuse Awareness Month activities (October)
  • Develop new topics and activities for weekly support group
  • Update community resources
  • Assist with documenting Immediate Response Program (IRP) calls from the Superior Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff Department
  • Research and develop training and/or advocacy materials related to trauma-informed care
  • Provide support such as safety planning, referrals or shelter screening to victims
  • Work with individual clients on housing issues
  • Work with individual clients on employment issues
  • Assist clients with Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) procedures
  • Plan and facilitate weekly support group
  • Attend court with clients for support
  • Provide off-site advocacy, such as responding to hospital calls, on an as-needed basis
  • Provide transportation to clients over the age of 8
  • Participate in agency webinars as recommended by Supervisor
  • Represent CASDA at public events (tabling, presentations)
  • Assist CASDA at fundraising events
  • Answer 24-hour help-line and assist with walk-ins

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Required Qualifications
Desire to support victims of abuse and to advocate for a community effort to end violence, strong interpersonal communication skills, basic computer skills (Internet, Microsoft Office, etc.), ability to balance multiple and varied projects, ability to maintain client and agency confidentiality

Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience volunteering and/or coordinating volunteers

Responsibilities may include:

  • Help develop new sources for volunteers by researching potential partnerships with area businesses, school programs and organizations.
  • Help track volunteer activities, compile program data and analyze/communicate outcomes
  • Help update CASDA’s outreach materials for volunteer recruitment
  • Assist with coordinating volunteers, duties and materials for CASDA’s special events
  • Help create and execute events and activities for volunteer recognition
  • Conduct audits on volunteer files
  • Prepare CASDA social media calendar
  • Help organize and participate in one or more CASDA outreach events
  • Help develop and support new fundraising opportunities
  • Assist current shelter and outreach clients with information and referrals, as needed
  • Provide off-site advocacy, such as responding to hospital calls, on an as-needed basis
  • Provide transportation to clients over the age of 8
  • Attend CASDA staff meetings and training
  • Participate in agency webinars as recommended by supervisor
  • Assist CASDA at fundraising events
  • Represent CASDA at public events (tabling)
  • Answer 24-hour help-line and assist with walk-ins
  • Accept, sort and organize donated items
