Making Payments
If you want someone else to be able to access and pay your bill, you will need to send them an invitation via the student payment portal. Parents (and other non-students) should use the payer portal, and non-current students should use the prior student portal.

Steps to Paying Your Bill

  • Understand Your Bill
  • Payment Options

Description of Charges

Your bill lists the financial aid and charges in US dollars for ONE term. If you have not pre-registered, your charges may be based on anticipated, full-time enrollment. Your initial bill may change if you change your schedule. It is important to pay the amount due from this bill, because an updated e-bill will not be created until the add/drop date at the end of September. Waiting to pay will result in a late fee up to $200.

Tuition

Applicable course fees will be applied when you complete your course registration process. If you have not completed registering for classes, your tuition may not be assessed at the full-time rate. See the current cost of attendance.

Housing and Food

Your housing/meal plan charges have been billed according to the preferences you indicated on your housing application. If you will be living on campus and your housing application is incomplete, housing and food may not be included on the bill. Complete the Housing and Meal Plan Agreement. See current residence hall pricing.

Student Fees

For a full description of student fees, see below.

Understanding Required Student Fees

Student Sustainability Programs Fee

Assessed by the Northland College Student Association for all students enrolled in 8 or more credits. Funds are allocated by our student-administered grant program that funds projects designed to enhance sustainability and increase energy efficiency on the Northland campus. Student-led applications are evaluated by a committee.

Northland College Student Association Fee

Assessed for all students enrolled in 8 or more credits per session to help operate the association and to provide student activities and entertainment.

Comprehensive Fee

Assessed for all students enrolled in 8 or more credits per session to support student services, including online services, health services, student communication/publications, computer labs, and other activities available to all students.

Remove a Student Accounts Hold

There are several reasons why there could be a HOLD on your account. If you do not clear your HOLD by the last day to add/drop in September and/or January, you will be assessed a late payment fee up to $200. Please read your billing emails carefully and follow the directions given to you to resolve the issue.

  1. Remaining Balance
If you have a balance at the end of add/drop and are not already using the NelNet payment plan, applying your work study, or awaiting a third-party payment (ie. VA, educational plan, outside scholarship), you are placed on HOLD.
  2. Failure to Accept Your Financial Aid Award
Not accepting your award and/or not paying your bill can cause a HOLD on your student account.
  3. Missing Information
Is financial aid telling you to finalize documentation? Do you need to update your home address with the registrar? Are you going on a May Term trip that you have not paid off? You may be on HOLD because of these issues.

Adjusting or Making Billing Changes

Certain choices you make may affect the amount you owe. Changing your meal plan, room type, or course schedule may result in billing changes. Use the monthly email reminder from CASHNet to check your billing activity.

Billing and Payment FAQs

I’m a parent. Why can’t you talk to me about my student’s bill?
The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, also known as the Buckley Amendment, is designed to protect the privacy of student records. This also applies to financial records. Your student needs to sign a FERPA form (managed by the Office of the Registrar) and name you as representative of their account if they wish to allow the Office of Student Financial Services staff to discuss their bill with you.

How do I view and pay the bill?
View or pay your bill online. The Send Payer Invite option is located under the student profile and must be sent by the student when they are logged into their account. This action will provide authorized users with secure log-in information from the student that they are given access to.

When is tuition due?
Fall Term tuition is due by August 15 and Winter Term tuition is due by January 15. May Term tuition is due by April 15. Be sure to use the Internal Payment Arrangement Form or the NelNet Campus Commerce payment plan to avoid the late payment fee (up to $200) for balances not paid in full. Your schedule will be dropped at the end of the add/drop period if you have a balance not covered by some type of payment arrangement.

What if I use NelNet Campus Commerce or have third party paying my bill?
If you use our payment plan company NelNet or have payments coming from a Tribe or federal or state government, you will not be assessed a late fee.

Will there be any additional charges?

The amount you owe could change for the following reasons (not an all-inclusive list):

  • Travel courses requiring substantial deposits
  • Orientation (participating in Campus-based New Student Orientation or certain optional Outdoor Orientation trips)
  • Change in your course schedule (full-time or part-time status)
  • Housing or meal plan changes

How do I make a payment from another country?
Northland College has partnered with Flywire to streamline the fee payment process for our international students and payers. Flywire offers multiple payment options, excellent foreign exchange rates, and allows you to pay from almost any country. They will ensure that your payment arrives safely and accurately with no hidden fees. To make your payment, visit northland.flywire.com. If you require any help with your payment, visit www.flywire.com/help.

Why do I have a late fee?
A late fee up to $200 is assessed for unpaid balances after each add/drop period.

What is the Registration Disclosure Agreement?
The Registration Disclosure Agreement must be signed by every student. It states that the student and a designated responsible party agree to pay for the services that Northland offers.

I am going to apply for financial aid. Can I use the NelNet Campus Commerce plan?
Yes, but you must complete the financial aid process to ensure that financial aid is applied to your account on time. Go to fafsa.ed.gov to apply.

What if I sign up for the NelNet Campus Commerce plan, make the first payment, and then receive a financial aid offer?
Once your financial aid package is completed, your payment plan can be adjusted to reflect your financial aid. If the payment that you made results in a credit balance, then you may qualify for a refund.

Why doesn’t my work study appear on the bill?
The work-study award is considered a financial aid award; however, it is not applied directly to the bill because the money must be earned by working. You can, however, complete a campus earnings form on the payroll portal to elect to have some or all of your work-study earnings applied directly to your tuition bill.

How do I know how much my work-study award is?
Log in to view your financial aid award.

How do I know how much of my work-study award is remaining?
Contact the Office of Human Resources.

I have a question that has not been answered here. Who should I talk to?
If it is a general financial question, call Student Financial Services at 715-682-1255. If your question concerns payment arrangements, call Student Accounts at 715-682-1352. The number for NelNet Campus Commerce is 800-609-8056.
