Every winter, snow turns summer hiking trails and unplowed roads into enticing corridors for adventure and exploration of backwoods’ wonders. This two-part workshop will prepare you to explore these wonders on skis by providing practical information about equipment, safety, and backwoods locations, as well as an opportunity to make your first excursion with an experienced guide.
Part 1: February 21 from 4:30 to 5:30, focuses on equipment, safety, and backwoods locations in the Chequamegon Bay region. Open to all, no registration required.
Part 2: February 23 from 9:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m. A guided ski journey to a special backwoods location. Pre-Registration required. $10 fee covers skis and transportation.
Backwoods Ski Guide
Alan Brew is director of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute and a Professor of English at Northland College. He began exploring back woodlots on borrowed skis in grade school and has since pursued his passion for untracked snow on remote trails in the Appalachians, in the mountains of northwestern Montana, and on numerous trails, roads, rivers, and lakes of northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.
