To maintain good mental and physical health, Northland encourages you to stay active and get outside. Here are some resources to make that happen.
The Northland College John N. Allen Fitness and Recreation Center is an 8,000 square foot open floor space for recreation, conditioning, physical training, and wellness programs. The facility is open to students, faculty, and staff (including partners and dependents over age 14).
The facility features: strength machines, spin bikes, treadmills, and elliptical trainers; free weights and core equipment; exercise studio for yoga, dance, and group fitness classes; bouldering wall (more info on facebook)
Face coverings must be worn when entering, traversing, and exiting from the fitness center. This includes when using equipment, with the exception of aerobic equipment (treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals). Face covering use on aerobic equipment is at the user’s discretion.
Students, employees, and employee partner/dependent over 14 may use the facility. Everyone must complete the facility use waiver.

Sunshine Bike Shop
Since the mid-1990’s, Northland’s Sunshine Community Bike Shop has served as a hub for bike enthusiasts, and a reminder of the potential of bicycles to bring us closer to sustainability. The shop, located in the straw bale building, has tools, parts, and plenty of advice to offer to anyone who wants to repair their bike or build a bike from scratch.
If you are interested in learning the ABC’s of bike repair, you are welcome and encouraged to volunteer alongside our work-study students who manage the shop.
Until further notice, we are only allowing two students inside at a time, but if it is nice outside, we can do work outside the shop as well. Please remember to wear your mask (and dress for cold weather)!
Outpost Gear Rental
The Northland College Outpost rents personal outdoor recreational equipment to Northland students, staff, and faculty. We have a new home located on the first floor of the Sigurd Olson Institute. Northland community members wishing to rent outdoor recreational equipment can visit the Outpost’s glassed interface rental office during open Outpost hours, or email the Outpost directly to reserve gear.
