Learn the art and science of trail building. Connect with a community of like-minded trail enthusiasts. Eat good food, and enjoy great conversations around the fire. Get to know one of the coolest professors at Northland! Get incredible sleep each night after fulfilling days of giving back to one of the most beloved outdoor resources in Wisconsin. No previous trail building experience necessary. All instruction, equipment, transportation, and food is being provided by SOEI Outdoor Pursuits.
The full cost of facilitating this SOEI weekend trip ($225.00/person) has been largely offset by a generous grant from the John C. Bock Foundation. What’s more, to meet our goal of ensuring equitable access to our experiences, students may choose from three price-point options.
There will be a pre-trip meeting in the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute on Thursday, September 30 at 6 p.m. This outing will depart from the SOEI at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 8 and return on Sunday, October 10 by 5:30 p.m.

Considered by many to be a ‘miniature Boundary Waters’, the Sylvania Wilderness in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan’s Ottawa National Forest is without a doubt one of the most spectacular hidden gems in our region. Only two hours from campus, you’ll find yourself enjoying a chill weekend canoeing and camping getaway that will rival any Boundary Waters trip. Join SOEI student leaders for a weekend getaway during the best time of year for outdoor adventures—fewer people, no bugs, crisp evening campfires, and bonkers fall colors. No previous canoeing experience necessary. All instruction, paddling and camping equipment, and meals are provided by SOEI Outdoor Pursuits.

Nestled on the south shore of Lake Namekagon, you’ll enjoy leisurely walks through the Forest Lodge Nature Trail, lounging in the Boat House overlooking Champaign Island, and eating hearty home-cooked meals before settling in around the fireplace for evenings of board games and crafts. This weekend is all about returning to campus well-rested and ready to finish the semester strong.
